Our INTELLIGENT ROAD SAFETY BARRIER can incorporate different technological applications, which will allow the administration and the concessionaires to manage the incidents on the roads and highways more quickly and efficiently.
At the present time, a series of utilities have been defined that will allow, through the placement of a LED screen and other sensors, the intelligent management of traffic, accidents and their consequences:
Accident warning signs: red triangle.
In the event that a collision occurs against the barrier, a sensor located on the barrier itself will activate on the LED screen a series of red triangles that will light up over 1,000m before and after the area where the has produced the impact, warning the rest of drivers of the presence of an accident on the road. The signaling distance can be modified from the traffic control center, depending on the characteristics, the traffic and the state of the road.
Currently there are an average of 30 accidents a day in the European Union due to collisions with a vehicle that has suffered an accident and is hit by another that does not see it, accidents that cause many deaths and injuries.
Fault warning signs: orange triangle.
Every day there are dozens of breakdowns or punctures in our roads that force drivers to stop the vehicle on the shoulder. The placement of a push button incorporated in the structure of the barrier itself has been foreseen,; this will allow the drivers of the vehicles that suffer a fault to signal the situation of their vehicle on the shoulder:
1,000m forward and backward from the point of failure (the ignition distance of the signals can be modified from the control center depending on the characteristics of the road).
This fault signal can also be activated, without leaving the vehicle, by using an App programmed for this purpose and that users of the roads can be downloaded to their mobile.
It is estimated that 50 deaths per year will be avoided due to running over the shoulders and more than 300 accidents due to poor signaling of faults (data provided by the DGT).
Illumination of the road: by means of the incorporation of a series of strips of LED lights – white color (night illumination) and orange (for the fog).
The constant evolution of LED lighting technology allows installing a series of lights of this type on the continuous rubber support to replace traditional lighting (expensive, inefficient and highly polluting).
The placement of a series of sensors to detect rain, ice, fog … in the structure of the barrier itself will allow these lights to be activated warning drivers of the conditions of the road surface on which they are circulating, well in advance so that they can adapt their speed to these circumstances.
Issuance of notices to the DGT and emergency services:
At the instant in which a vehicle hits the barrier, a warning will be activated, either via cable / GSM / 4G / 5G or a similar technology, and appropriate to the circumstances of the environment in which the road in question is located, and it will communicate the incident to the traffic management center and emergency services; allowing to know the exact location of the accident.
This will speed up the performance of emergency services for faster attention and evacuation of the injured (active management of accidents); allowing the infrastructure manager to act on traffic and possible retentions actively.
Also the quick evacuation of the injured will prevent deaths and serious injuries. The studies of the DGT and various associations consulted indicate that the first ten / fifteen minutes are critical in the effective treatment of the victims.
By placing ultrasonic emitters will prevent the entry of animals to the road (dogs, wild boars, deers, horses …), avoiding accidents by running over or sudden evasion maneuvers that normally end with the exit of the road of the vehicle involved.
According to data from the DGT, approximately 15,000 accidents involving animals occur annually in Spain (data from 2014). Accidents are important when the shock occurs against medium-sized animals (wild boars – 33% of the total) or large size (roe deers, deers – 22% of the total). As an example in 2013, this type of accident caused personal injuries to 484 (of which 4 died, 51 were seriously injured and the rest suffered minor injuries).
The average cost of the 3,100 accidents that caused material damage was € 1,400, which implies a direct cost to insurers of € 4,340,000 (amount to which must be added the hospital cost of the injured and Social Security for sick leave).
Due to the versatility of our barrier and because the patent includes any present or future technological application that can be developed, the future possibilities are practically unlimited.
In this sense our engineers have already proposed new solutions that will improve road safety; for example, an app that lets the cars know the presence of cyclists; an application that allows the authorities know which cars circulate without insurance; an app for the payment of tolls per kilometer traveled without stopping …
The Modularity of the design allows to assure that the intelligent barrier will satisfy the needs of any Administration or concessionaire in the management of its roads. Each of the technological solutions implemented is independent, and this allows them to be incorporated as the needs of the road require it (cost depending on the needs).
